Press Release -

Brussels, November 4, 2025 – After 3.5 years of innovation and collaboration, the EU-funded SURPASS Project (Safe and Sustainable by Design Polymer Materials) held its Final Meeting and Workshop in Brussels, marking the successful completion of its mission to accelerate the transition of the polymer industry towards greater safety, circularity, and sustainability.

Hosted by the CEA (Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique et aux Energies Alternatives) at Maison Irène and Frédéric Joliot-Curie, and coordinated by Simon Clavaguera, the event brought together partners from across Europe, including CT-IPC, Waste Free Oceans, GEONARDO, LEITAT, CIDETEC, INDRESMAT, UNE, WIPAK, Fraunhofer ICT, RIVM, and BASF, as well as representatives from the European Commission, Research and Technology Organisations and industrial associations from the plastic sector. The meeting showcased the consortium’s achievements in developing Safe, Sustainable and Recyclable by Design (SSRbD) solutions for advanced polymer materials. The event also presented the SURPASS digital infrastructure, a platform designed to support European SMEs in creating the next generation of safe and circular plastics.

Showcasing Case Studies and Digital Innovation

The event opened with a warm welcome by CEA, followed by four thematic sessions illustrating SURPASS’s real-world applications:

  • Case Study 1 – Advanced Polymeric Materials and Processes for the Construction Industry by INDRESMAT, LEITAT and CEA.

Case Study 2 – Advanced Polymeric Materials and Processes for the Mobility Sector by CIDETEC, Fraunhofer ICT and BASF.

  • Case Study 3 – Advanced Polymeric Materials and Processes for the Food Packaging Industry by CT-IPC, Fraunhofer ICT and WIPAK.

  • Session 4 – Results of Safe and Sustainable by Design assessments and the SURPASS Digital Platform, jointly developed by CEA, RIVM, LEITAT, UGA, and GEONARDO.

These sessions highlighted the project’s unique integration of material innovation with digital tools enabling lifecycle safety and sustainability assessments.

Final Consortium Meeting and Future Outlook

In parallel with the public session, the SURPASS partners gathered for their final consortium meeting. Discussions focused on the importance of dissemination, communication, standardization, and exploitation activities - led by Waste Free Oceans (WFO) through Work Package 6 (WP6), in collaboration with CEA, UNE, and GEONARDO.

Several scientific publications and conference presentations are already in preparation, ensuring that the project’s methodologies and findings continue to guide European industry and policy frameworks beyond the project’s lifetime.

A Celebration of Collaboration

The public session concluded with a Poster Session and Networking Lunch, offering participants an opportunity to exchange insights and explore future collaborations. The day ended with a Final Social Dinner in Brussels — a symbolic celebration of the partnership that has driven innovation across research, industry, and environmental advocacy.

About SURPASS

The SURPASS Project (2022-2025) received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation program under grant no. 101057901. Its overarching goal was to develop and demonstrate Safe and Sustainable by Design approaches for polymer materials, combining experimental research, digital tools, and lifecycle thinking to support the EU’s transition towards a circular and climate-neutral economy.
