Budapest, Hungary

From single-use bans to sustainable design, the global movement to rethink plastics is gaining momentum. At the heart of this transformation is the SURPASS Project—a Horizon 2020-funded initiative working to reshape the future of polymer design through cutting-edge research, collaboration, and innovation.

Next stop? Budapest.

On May 27–28, 2025, the SURPASS Consortium will convene in Hungary’s capital for its 7th Consortium Meeting, hosted by project partner GEONARDO at the Central European University campus. This two-day gathering promises to be more than just a technical checkpoint—it’s a moment of reflection, collaboration, and strategic planning for the final phases of the project.

A Milestone for Polymer Innovation

Launched under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme, the SURPASS Project focuses on safe-, sustainable- and recyclable-by-design polymeric systems—paving the way toward the next generation of plastics that are compatible with both environmental sustainability and industrial competitiveness.

The Budapest meeting brings together leading experts from academia, research institutions, and industry. Participants will share the latest updates from all Work Packages, including:

  • Technical achievements in polymer development

  • Regulatory and compliance developments

  • Strategies for exploitation, business planning, and impact

  • Break-out sessions on scientific publications and knowledge exchange

  • General Assembly discussions to align on goals for the project’s final chapter

“This meeting marks a crucial checkpoint in the SURPASS journey,” said María Isabel Salinas of Waste Free Oceans, who leads Work Package 6 on communication, dissemination, and exploitation.“Not only will we review our scientific and technical progress, but we will also take significant steps toward ensuring that our solutions are scalable, impactful, and aligned with Europe’s sustainable ambitions.”

Beyond the Boardroom: Culture & Collaboration

The SURPASS project doesn’t just thrive on science—it thrives on connection. Beyond the structured sessions, attendees will have the opportunity to network and engage in cultural experiences, including a guided city tour of Budapest and a consortium dinner, deepening the bonds that fuel interdisciplinary progress.

Driving Real Impact

With sustainability at its core, SURPASS is about more than polymers—it’s about people, planet, and practical solutions. The innovations born from this project have the potential to revolutionize how we design, use, and dispose of plastics across industries.

As the project enters its final stretch toward the concluding meeting in Brussels, the work being done in Budapest will be instrumental in ensuring that SURPASS not only meets its goals—but leaves a legacy.
